Alpha male, bull, the boss of this herd of Ankole-Watusi is a modern American breed of domestic cattle. It deriving from the Ankole group of Sanga cattle breeds of central Africa, characterized by very large horns. The Ankole-Watusi cattle of Ankole were imported to Germany as zoo specimens in the early twentieth century. (Photographed at Safari West, Santa Rosa, CA,USA.)Image captured while on tour 2010; herd of Watusi Longhorn Cattle, walking toward one of the reservoirs used to supply drinking water on the 400 acre Safari West's wild protected, endangered animal preserve. This alpha-male, the boss, sensed the time for tanking up was over gave a signal, a grunt; his entire herd, heard the signal - looked up in unison, with water dripping from their chins. In unison, the herd filed out as it filed in; back up the trail leading to a remote cool spot on the 400 acre preserve.
